Knowing Eric's going to jump on this one, I'm going to hazard a guess that this is a cricket, perhaps?

Tree cricket (Oecanthus) and with that red head it looks to be Oecanthus niveus

 
I agree with Sam,
This looks like O. niveus -- based on the red on the head extends into the pronotum.

You're right. The diagnostic black marking on the pedicel would be correct but I don't understand about the "J."


 
 
Not Sure
As best I can tell from the antennal markings in this key, my specimen could be a Oecanthus rileyi. However, it does not have red on the head and I do not see any posts from my region.

Grasshoppers are not my forte. The more I read, the less I know. Advice appreciated, as I do not feel comfortable moving. You guys know what's best. Thanks

I doubt I'll find anything, but I'll check my RAW files this weekend. I generally don't even bother with Orthoptera and don't know what's important. At least I'll know what to photograph in the future. John, thanks for your time and help. Robert
