Bentsen caterpillar - Elymiotis notodontoides

I believe that this critter was feeding on Barbados Cherry (Malphigia glabra). Looks to me like a Nododontid caterpillar, most of all like subfamily Nystaleinae, but none seem to match the distinctive facial markings of this one. Unless those markings appear and disappear with age...

This has the look of Elymiotis

See a Janzen image here. It looks like we have only one, Elymiotis notodontoides, but we can't find any images of the caterpillar online. We would guess that's what you have here, but don't know how to verify it.

Thanks John & Jane! I e-mailed Dave Wagner and received this reply:

"It looks like a notodontid...that name seems correct to me. Excellent detective work by john and jane balaban. Impressive.

That is the only image of the species of which I am aware. Excellent."

Guess we need to add a new Guide page! And then see if anybody can get some photos of the adult to complete the set! But I think I'll do it tomorrow, it's almost 1:30 AM here, I need to get some sleep first...
