earwig - Forficula auricularia - male

earwig - Forficula auricularia - Male
Great Brook Farm State Park, Carlisle, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
July 5, 2009
Is this earwig immature because it looks like the wings aren't grown in yet.

wings always short; it's a boy
The forewings of earwigs are always short, and they can fold the hindwings up under them so they look almost wingless. I don't know much about their early instars, but wing length probably isn't as reliable for determining age as it is in longer-winged insect families.

The widely curved cerci (pincers) mean it's a male; the cerci of females are straight and shorter.
