Neocicada hieroglyphica
A common species throughout the south and points north.

If this was photographed in Big Bend National Park it is definitely NOT N. hieroglyphica - the distribution of that species does not extend to that part of west Texas. It is N. chisos, the endogenous Neocicada species in the park. This species can also be found in the Davis mountains and probably extends into Mexico. suggest the recent paper by Sanborn et al in Systematic Entomology (2005, available on-line Feb 10)

Thanks for the Update
Yes, you are correct that this may be N. chisos. At first glance N. hieroglyphica, N. hieroglyphica var. johannis and N. chisos are very similar.

I just recently received a copy of Sanborn's paper and it is very enlightening. Not being familiar with the geography of Texas and knowing that N. hieroglyphica extends well into Texas from points east and the similarities I assumed this was N. hieroglyphica.

Maybe a new guide page needs to be created for N. chisos.
