Thanks very much Andy. This
Thanks very much Andy. This was very different from others I have encountered. Without glasses, I thought it was a Pentatomid till the first one disappeared in a jump.

from ID Request to new species page. Maybe the "variety" that Andy referred to is the subspecies P. atra albovenosa mentioned on the species page? - I'm not sure.

"P. atra albovenosa"
"Subspecies" are geographic segregates of a species that hybridize wherever they come in contact with each other. Since the variety "albovenosa" is found together with the black form "atra" throughout the range of the species, these are variants of the same species, NOT subspecies.

Thanks for clarifying
On the species page, I've re-written it as Phylloscelis atra [var. albovenosa] instead of italicizing all three words.
