Large colorful fly -
Chalcosyrphus curvarius
Machias, Washington County, Maine, USA
July 5, 2009
Size: ~14mm
Unfortunately this fly didn't survive being chilled. I guess the motel fridge was a bit too cold for it.

ID from specimen; the combination of orange fore- and mid-femora, black hind coxa, and whitish haltere is distinctive for this species.
Moved from

Chalcosyrphus?
Just guessing based on similar appearance -- so wait for one of the Diptera experts to confirm -- but this looks like a good match to me (seen in an orange flavor below):
[EDIT: Hey, wait a minute... A little more searching and I found one of your images that has been identified as Tribe Xylotini, possible
Chalcosyrphus
or
Xylota
sp. So, maybe it could just as easily be
Xylota
.]

One more...
Also, this one from Eric:
(I'm posting all these partially in the hope that if an expert is able to identify your high-quality images of this fly, then perhaps they will be able to resolve these others as well.)
