Orange-toned Mecyna ? - Ostrinia nubilalis

Orange-toned Mecyna ? - Ostrinia nubilalis
Ailsa Craig, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada
August 27, 2005
Came to garage light. I'm hoping that someone can shed more light on the differences between European Corn Borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) and Orange-toned Mecyna (Mecyna submedialis). I made a page for Orange-toned Mecyna but would like corrections/comments on the suggested differences and to what extent variation among individuals and/or the sexes might complicate identification. Thanks.

Moved from Crambid Snout Moths.

Ostrinia nubilalis is sexually dimorphic, with the females being larger and paler than the males. The reniform/orbicular spots on nubilalis are just dots, while those spots on Mecyna submedialis appear to be larger, more obscure, and "hollow" (with light scales in the center).
