Allacma fusca, composed eyes
Excellent illustration of the composed eye of Collembola. Do not confuse this with the compound eye of Insecta. In Collembola the single eyes do not touch eachother. The single eyes form a particular pattern. In the right eye (in this picture at the left) the single eyes are aranged in a pattern that has the shape of the digit '5' (in this picture rotated 180 degrees).
Each single eye has a designated name: A-B-C-D-E-F-G-H.

A schematic of the pattern of the single eyes in the right composed eye in 'ASCII art'... :

^
| Front direction

B-A
|
C-D
     \
H   E
|    /
G-F

This is the max pattern. In many species some particular single eyes are missing. In many soil and cave inhabiting species all eyes are missing.
