Sawfly Larva? - Neurotoma edwardi

The leaves look more like poplar

to us than cherry, so we were wondering if these might be related to the poplar tentmaker, Clostera inclusa, but can't find any images or descriptions of the early instars. Wagner does mention C. strigosus which he says lacks the middorsal knobs and he says there are five species of Clostera occuring in eastern Canada. Will try to find out more. Maybe Tony Thomas will know more.

These larvae look

too shiny to be a Clostera sp. My guess would be a Webspinning Sawfly, Family Pamphiliidae

It looks a bit like this Pamphiliidae larva, just a different color. It also looks a lot like Troy's pictures on this page.

poplar

Oops, that's poplar alright. I was finding these quite a few times, in nests just like this. A tentmaker caterpillar would make sense.
