wasp or mud dobber - Polistes

wasp or mud dobber - Polistes
tomball, harris County, Texas, USA
July 6, 2009
Size: about 1 inch
when I got near, it took a very defensive stance. I'd back away it would go back to what ever it was doing. But never got aggressive

....
This is a Red Wasp not a Mud Dauber but I don't know which species specifically. Please wait for an expert.

Probably Polistes carolina
But there's always the possibility of P. perplexus. The Houston specimens of P. carolina have more red, rather than the occasional black markings that P. perplexus has.
