Lady beetle pupa - Day 13 - Harmonia axyridis - female

Lady beetle pupa - Day 13 - Harmonia axyridis - Female
Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 7, 2009
Size: 6 mm
This is the pupa of the larva I photographed every day. It can be identified as H. axyridis by the double-branched tubercules of the larval "skin" at the rear of the pupa (on the right in this photo).

The pupal stage lasted five days (Day 13 to Day 17). I did not photograph it daily, because it did not visibly change.

Wow -
a very nice series!

"It can be identified as H. axyridis by the double-branched tubercules of the larval "skin" at the rear of the pupa (on the right in this photo)" - I'd love to know your reference here - is there a key to the genera or species of immature coccinellids somewhere?

coccinellid pupae
Right now, this is just from observation and viewing lots of photos of the larvae and pupae of every other lady beetle on BugGuide - not scientifically proven. There is a key to lady beetle larvae that I've requested through interlibrary loan:

http://bugguide.net/node/view/234206

When I get my hands on it I'll update my photos with references. I'm also really looking forward to going through the "Unidentified Eggs, Larvae, and Pupae" pages with the larval key in hand. I feel like a 5-year-old waiting for Christmas...
