Scissor-grinder - Megatibicen auletes - female

Scissor-grinder - Megatibicen auletes - Female
Hwy 55 and Sedwick, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
August 18, 2005
Size: 42 mm body length
Found under a lighted wall just before dawn, about 6:00 a.m. This very large (body length 42 mm, head-to-wingtips, 64 mm) Tibicen is very pruinose. I suspect it is Tibicen auletes, and comments confirm this. Interesting that this individual was found within a few meters of the only other individual of this species I've been able to photograph, but almost exactly two years previously--image now deleted, since it was of poor quality.

I agree,
This is definately Tibicen auletes. It's a very large Cicada and the heavy pruinosity is a dead giveaway. My friend in Maryland was successful just last night in obtaining 6 T. auletes specimens by using light to attract them. He has mentioned this has been an unusually good year for T. auletes and other species of Tibicens. Also, looks to be female.
