Acantholyda ruficeps (Harrington)
Quite a rare species; only 4 specimens in the collection for comparison. Hosts are pines.

Pamphiliidae
Either Cephalcia or Acantholyda. One would think a pretty thing like this would be easy but nothing comes to mind. I'll check the collection this week.

What is useful for ID?
What features tend to be useful to identify sawflies to genus or species?

sawfly id
Depends on the group. Most characters are wing venation, antennae, tarsal claws, female sawsheath, female ovipositor, male genitalia, but there are others. For genera of these pamphiliids, I mainly need to see the tarsal claws and whether or not there is a preapical spine on the foretibia. Can't always see these in photos, but sometimes the color is distinctive enough to place it, like this one.
