Heliodinidae - Embola powelli

Heliodinidae - Embola powelli
Otero Mesa, Otero County, New Mexico, USA
July 15, 2009

Moved
Moved from Heliodinidae.

Probably Embola powelli
Based on the figures in Hsu and Powell 2004, this is closest to Embola powelli (Fig. 195). More than in any other species that is illustrated therein, the form and location of the lead-gray markings on the forewing of E. powelli agree with those seen in this moth, as does the arrangement (i.e., pattern of presence or absence) of black scaling along the costal and dorsal margins of the forewing. And of course the apparent narrow gray stripe in the outer orange patch is merely the hind leg sitting in the way, not an actual marking of the forewing.

This also is the species represented in the other three photos in this series (here, here, and here).

Heliodinidae: Doesn't seem to fit any of the species....
....shown in Moths of Western North America or in the plates of the standard treatise for the family by Hsu and Powell in large .pdf file here. I'm sending the photo to Powell to see if he can help.

Jerry Powell Can't ID without specimen in this case
Doesn't seem to match anything he knows about. Might simply be variation in a known species or else something undescribed. This is a good case to illustrate the need for collecting specimens for Essig Museum determination or for joining the All-Leps Barcoding Project. There will be many cases like this both at your locality and throughout the desert southwest.
