Carpenter Ants - Camponotus laevissimus

Carpenter Ants - Camponotus laevissimus
Pack Forest (near Eatonville), Pierce County, Washington, USA
July 11, 2009
These ants lived in a large clump of dirt still attached to a root ball of a fallen tree on the side of the Hugo Peak trail. I know these two ants aren't the same individual, but I linked them to show examples of two castes from the same colony. This little guy was busy going down a hole, bringing out frass (that closely resembled sawdust), and dumping it over the edge of the "cliff".

looks like Camponotus maybe pennsylvanicus
To me. I'm definitely not an ant expert, and I'd wonder if the same species would be on the west coast as rest of country or not.
