Carpenter Ants - Camponotus laevissimus

Hugo Peak trail. This guy, on the other hand, kept wandering around outside the entrances into the colony, checking the other ants' credentials, and basically looking like he was ready for a fight.

Camponotus laevigatus, an atypically shiny, black carpenter ant, common in western mountains.
