Unknown - cobweb spider? - Meta ovalis
Crater Lake - Delaware Water Gap Rec Area, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA
June 12, 2009
The area that we found these spiders are high in the NJ mountains in a wooded area off of a gravel road. There was a large piece of slate covering what seemed to be maybe an old well head. These where on the underside when we turned it over. Photo 2, which just seems like it might be a smaller version of it, was with 3 of the large ones as shown in Photo 1. House spider or something else?
Help would be appreciated.

Cave Orb Weavers
These appear to be Cave Orb Weavers. This being a female and the other a male.

They really resemble Meta ovalis

Also, linked images should only be of the same specimen.

Thanks Jebus31. I only added
Thanks Jebus31.
I only added the additional photo to maybe help with id since they did look similar to me. Odd, that we did not see any type of web anywhere in the hole or the slate. But I am glad because its not something I would want to walk through.
