Ant & Sawdust - Camponotus pennsylvanicus

Ant & Sawdust - Camponotus pennsylvanicus
Dalton, Whitfield County, Georgia, USA
July 16, 2009
Size: ? guess of 0.7 cm ???
This ant was removing sawdust from a hole in a tree. It would come to a lip outside the hole and hang upside-down (like in the photo) and drop a pice of sawdust into the pile. There were many ants in the general area, some small ants and others of this same species. Why is it doing this and what kind of ant is it? I have observed this behavior in other places.
