Size: Around an inch.
It went in and out of the hole in the log several times.

Trypoxylon collinum
Moved from ID Request. In your area this is the only Trypoxylon (Trypargilum) with a red band on the abdomen.

I think this is a
Trypoxylon sp.(Crabronidae).
