Seconded - fall webworm
Despite having "fall" in the name, it's common in the South as early as May.

This one appears to have left its foodplant in the prepupal "wandering" stage - many caterpillars roam around looking for a place to build a cocoon or chrysalis, even crossing roads and crawling up buildings!
