Tibicen latifasciatus - Neotibicen latifasciatus - male

Tibicen latifasciatus - Neotibicen latifasciatus - Male
Ocala, Marion County, Florida, USA
July 1, 2009
Ocala, Marion Co., FL
July 2009

According to the literature (historical accounts based on observations of the time), Tibicen latifasciatus was NOT known to occur in (confirmed/recorded from) Florida until recently!

Due to similarities in appearance (particularly with regards to preservation techniques and specimen condition), taxonomic ambiguities, and song, specimens originating from central Florida were long thought to belong to the taxon Tibicen pruinosus.

I am originally from central Florida (Ocala) and have not yet seen or collected "Tibicen pruinosus" (or winnemana) - as known elsewhere in the eastern US - much east or south of the FL Panhandle (i.e. areas adj. to Georgia & Alabama).

In contrast, Tibicen latifasciatus (syn. T. pruinosus latifasciatus), a.k.a. the "Coastal Scissor Grinder" or "Yodelling Cedar Sucker", can be locally abundant in central Florida and along the western Gulf Counties between Tampa Bay and the Big Bend region of Florida. Perhaps the greatest source of confusion results from the calls, as both latifasciatus and pruinosus sound virtually identical.
