Giant stag beetle - Lucanus elaphus

Giant stag beetle - Lucanus elaphus
Raleigh, near Rts 50 and US 70, Wake County, North Carolina, USA
June 20, 2005
Size: 1.6 inches minus horns.
Ants found this dead beetle before I did, but there is plenty of detail left. It is on a leaf of Magnolia grandiflora on the edge of standard brick steps. The body not including the horns or legs measured 1.6 inches long. Can anyone tell the sex?

Male L. elaphus
Only the male of this species have huge mandibles.
