Desert Grasshopper - Poecilotettix sanguineus - male

Desert Grasshopper - Poecilotettix sanguineus - Male
Junction of Willow Wash and Cucamongo Canyon, Inyo County, California, USA
June 17, 2009
On the cholla Cylindropuntia (Opuntia) echinocarpa. You'd think it could find a more hospitable plant to hop around on. Then again, I'm unlikely to try to brazenly grab at it if it's perched there.

Poecilotettix sanguineus
It usually hangs out on Composite shrubs, but a Cactus is a good place to stay well protected. It is a male.

Thanks David!
I just checked out Capinera et al(1) from the library. But I don't think I would have succeeded in getting the ID. Poecilotettix sanguineus is only mentioned there as a postscript to the description of P. pantherinus, and the picture might not have clicked with me. They state this is known as the "red-lined grasshopper" because of the red line along the top of the head and pronotum. Seems like this one is the "orange-lined" variety :-)

PS: You just inspired me to post another grasshopper, perhaps you could give it a look.
