Syrphid pupa & adult - Eristalis tenax

Syrphid pupa & adult - Eristalis tenax
Hudson, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
August 6, 2005
Size: adult body 15 mm
A number of these appeared in my dung beetle pitfall traps that I use with my battery-powered dung aroma intensifier. I was too slow to post the photos under ID requested to find out what manner of critter they were. One hatched into a syrphid fly! Now I just need to know genus and species.

Obviously the larvae can be free-roaming at times. My dung beetle trap was stationed about 30 ft. from the nearest large food source (giant cow dung heap)where the maggots must have fed and grown.
