The Bride - Catocala neogama

The Bride - Catocala neogama
Ailsa Craig, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada
September 4, 2005
Size: wingspan 60-70 mm
Came to garage light. There's at least two or three candidates that resemble this one.

Update 18 Mar 2006: changed title from "brownish-gray Catocala" and moved image from genus page to species page.

catocala
I agree with Dennis that this moth is Catocala neogama.

Closest I can get is Catocala
Closest I can get is Catocala neogama, Hodges# 8798, but it probably needs more verification. The other two candidates may be cerogama and subnata

Thanks, Dennis
Neogama was my first choice after looking through the CBIF images. But after seeing the last photo on this page (of C. piatrix), it looks good also.
I always wonder how reliable these web IDs are, and whether name labels are attached to the correct specimens; it wouldn't be difficult for labels to get switched when making web pages.

I once took 9 chocolate underwings up to the experts. I thought I had maybe 2-3 species in the bunch. Turns out there were 7 different species in the batch. Catocala is a tough group Robin.

Cautionary Notes....
Bill Oehlke provides, on that page, suitable cautions and discussion of points observed in the specimens that depart from expected "norms." It is relatively easy to to end up with misidentifications on websites. That's why critiques from readers is so valuable, and should always be encouraged and welcomed. Oehlke appears to me to be as careful as one can be.
