ID for Fly with Silver Abdomen in California?

ID for Fly with Silver Abdomen in California?
Webb Canyon, ~2000 ft. altitude, Los Angeles County, California, USA
July 17, 2009
Size: ~ 3 mm
This fly was quite dead and may have been slightly bloated from too much time floating in the pool. But, it shone like a silver coin and seemed somewhat unique, so I couldn't resist getting some photos. This first shot shows the reflective quality of the abdomen when directly in the sun, the next one shows less direct light, and the third one is entirely in shade. I took the final image after actually removing the fly from the water, and the abdomen definitely seemed to deflate quite a bit at that point (but it's still so shiny!). I'm hoping that the clear wing venation will be enough for someone to help me get this one to family. Thanks!

Mixed oak & chaparral habitat.

Milichiinae
Milichiella has some species with metallic abdomen but I am not certain it is the only one. Females have simple (non-reflective) abdomens.

Thank you, Dr. Buck...
...for your ID to family (well, to subfamily actually, but it doesn't look like BugGuide is organizing things on that level)! So, given the extremely shiny abdomen on my fly, can I correctly assume that this is a male?

Did you find a tiny visored helmet?
Looks like it's dressed as a knight for Ren Faire or some buggy party. Oddly intriguing; hope you get an ID.

Ye Olde Diptera
Funny, I was thinking that it looked like armor too! Sadly, this one seems to have had one too many aquatic jousting matches. I would have loved to see what this fly looked like in its natural state, buzzing about and what not...

Yes, it would have been nice to see aloft
A couple of bee flies - one posted recently and a different one I posted - have a metallic sheen. Quite attractive.
