Female Wool Carder Bee - Anthidium manicatum - female

Female Wool Carder Bee - Anthidium manicatum - Female
Seattle, UW campus, King County, Washington, USA
July 17, 2009
Size: 15-20mm
Another image of a female Wool Carder Bee just before it lands on a flower in the Univ. of Washington herb garden. The flowers they are attracted to, seen here in this photo, belong to a plant called "Restharrow" (Ononis spinosa; Leguminosae; perennial from Europe). The other plant in the herb garden that attracts wool carder bees is a yellow flower called Sideritis (Sideritis syriaca ssp. nusariensis; Labiatae; perennial from S. Europe.)

For people in the Seattle area: I can only recommend visiting the UW's public medicinal herb garden. It's a great place for watching insects or hummingbirds. And all the plants are nicely labelled :-) Here's a link: http://www.biology.washington.edu/mhg/index.html
