Interesting Small Mayfly

Interesting Small Mayfly
Brighton, Monroe County, New York, USA
July 20, 2009
This small mayfly was in an awkward place above my head on a lit lamp. Note the cap-like structures behind the eyes.

Baetidae
This is a male imago. Male baetids develop two sets of compound eyes. The caplike structures on the top of the head are "turbinate" eyes. The males grasp the females from underneath during mating flights, and mating is aerial. The sexually dimorphic traits seen in your photo--the elongated forelegs, terminal claspers, and large, upwardly oriented eyes--aid in that process.
