I don't know if the beetle was feeding on the Phlox divaricata, or simply resting on it. It flew off shortly after I shot this photo.

This looks exactly like the insect I saw and tried to photograph. Interestingly, the plant right next to the phlox on which I photographed this guy is Scutellaria resinosa.
