Matchmaker - Lucanus capreolus - Male Female

Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
July 17, 2009
Hey, buddy - three's a crowd!!

They went at it for several minutes before this bumbling chafer smacked into them and threw off their concentration. That sent them writhing and scrambling. At that point the male still seemed interested - he kept grabbing the female - but she just kept squirming. They ended up belly-to-belly at one point, but still scrambling, and once she righted herself, she went walking off, and he finally gave up.

This was the best shot I got with the chafer, due to all the scrambling.
