Necrophila americana
Perry County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 24, 2009
Size: 15 mm
Landed on a milkweed leaf. Looks like an American carrion beetle to me but I know nothing about beetles.

yup
Necrophila americana, I guess on the Margined Carrion beetle the black mark on the pronotum is a different shape and extends all the way to the base... I've found a margined, but man, I want to get one of these soon too- Guess I better start inspecting road kill... again.

Thanks for the ID
roadkill can sometimes be a good way to locate a yellowjacket colony :D

I love my wasps. Have learned so much from them that I would never have been able to learn without observing a colony up close.
Haven't once been stung by them either.

Nice!
Yeah, I've been stung by bees (when I was younger and probably did something stupid to provoke them) but never wasps... Wonder if I could convince my roommate to keep a colony of wasps in our closet or something... haha- Guessing that might not go over so well either...
