A Fishfly ? - Corydalus cornutus

A Fishfly ? - Corydalus cornutus
Sambo Island inside the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation area, New Jersey, USA
July 19, 2009
Size: 6"
3 - 5 Very large insects invaded our camp site on an island in the Delaware river on Saturday evening. They of course went for the lanterns. Once they landed on the ground they appeared to have a hard time sorting out there wings and taking flight again.
I have seen similar insects at Wawayanda State Park (NJ) but much smaller.
I captured a specimen and kept it in a "critter box" that night so I could get a few good shots once morning and light came. Then we set it free.
