14-spotted lady beetle larva - Day 8 (b), prepupa - Propylea quatuordecimpunctata
Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 5, 2009
Size: 6 mm
Prepupa, lateral view. This photo shows the tightly-curled legs and stiff arch of the body. Prepupal larvae may appear dead, but because the rear abdominal segments are attached to the leaf, they remain dorsal-side up, whereas dead insects are usually found on their backs.
Plant: Lady's thumb/smartweed (Polygonum or Persicaria sp., taxonomy unclear), my main source of aphids in July.
