Sawfly larva - Atomacera decepta

Sawfly larva - Atomacera decepta
Dearborn, Wayne County, Michigan, USA
July 25, 2009
A lot of them on my lone hollyhock.

Moved

Moved
Moved from Hollyhock Sawfly.

Argidae
Larva is not Neoptilia malvacearum. Also, N. malvacearum does not occur as far north as Mich. This looks more like an Atomacera, but the host does not match. Look for some adults flying around the plant in a couple weeks or next spring.

Was basing this on
host plant and matching images in the guide from Minnesota, farther north than me. A state of MN web site indicates they occur there, and they are apparently in OH as well (ohioline.osu.edu/sc193/sc193_5.pdf.

I raised some leaf mining flies to pupaes, but they've not emerged after a month. I'll try raising some of these and see what happens.

I found adults!
I checked out my hollyhock to see if there were still larvae I could raise or adults around. There were at least 4 or 5 adults; I took photos (not great, it was windy) and a specimen. They are indeed Atomacera decepta, Hibiscus sawfly, and this site indicates they do feed on hollyhock.

Hibiscus and hollyhocks -
Very nice! Always good to have adults to confirm the id. I found the following article: Boyd, D. 2005. Beating the hibiscus sawfly. American Nurseryman, February, pp. 22-25. Good pictures in this. He says they " . .also feed on hollyhock (Alcea rosae) and can potentially feed on other members of the mallow family (Malvaceae)." Most all records for hollyhock feeders from the North probably are Atomacera decepta. Neoptilia malvacearum is known only from southern Tex., N.Mex., Az., and Mexico.
