Eric,
There are 17 races of European Honey Bees. The coloration is the key to ID. Italians are the lightest colored of the races. Italians are Apis mellifera ligustica. First ID'd in 1806 by Spinola.

Thanks I saw a neat special on the disappearance of the honeybee on pbs last night...and come to think of it....it just doesn't seem like there are a lot of feral honeybees around like there used to be.

i'd call it a European honeybee, Apis mellifera
