This Lady is really a lady
A female. If that's a Mallow leaf, she may have been laying eggs. Looks like she's had a rough life, with chunks of wings and both palpi missing.

Yep.
West Coast Lady. Painted Lady does not have eye spots on topside of hind wing. American Lady has only two large eye spots on underside of hindwing.
