Size: 5mm (3/16")
Ants that have burrowed into a dead tree limb.
I broke off the limb and they were inside.
Please help with ID.

"Janitor ants"
I know for certain they are carpenter ants, genus
Camponotus
, and I also think they are "janitor ants" in the subgenus
Colobopsis
. Great find if so! The face of major workers is flattened to function as a literal living door to the entrance hole for foraging minor workers.

I'm confused
I've made a guide page for subgenus
Colobopsis
... These ants look like the ones that are identified as
Colobopsis
here:
but also like the ones identified as
Myrmentoma
here:
They don't look to me like the others that have been identified as
Colobopis
, so I'm wondering if they are in fact
Myrmentoma
?
