Hogna carolinensis mating - Hogna carolinensis - male - female

Hogna carolinensis mating - Hogna carolinensis - Male Female
Rosepark near the international airport, Salt lake County, Utah, USA
October 2, 2003
I found the female first, about a month or two before the male. I didn't know how to sex them at the time, but noticed the difference it their pedipalps and an internet search revieled the answer. I placed them together and began to take pictures. As soon as the male relized she was there (they touched). He jumped up onto her facing the opposite direction and she turned her abdomen to allow access to the epigynum.

Nice shot.
Glad to see your posting worked. How long did you keep this couple?

I let the male go a couple of days later. I hung onto the female for about two months hoping to see her lay some eggs. I had to let her go before she did. My wife didn't really care for the idea of spiderlings anyway. If I find another female I am going to try and seriously breed them though. I truly love to watch their behavior. Brian Nielsen
