you have a guess as to the group? Geminata? Ants of North America describes this group as having polymorphic worker caste. I observed ants of various sizes on the beach and I assume this represents polymorphism, if they are indeed of the same species. I am puzzled by the behavior of these ants which excavate "nests" well within the wave line. (We are talking about the bays, not the Gulf.) If you have any links to literature explaining this, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
