Wasp? and spider - Tenthredo

Wasp? and spider - Tenthredo
Elkton, Douglas County, Oregon, USA
June 11, 2009
Size: approx 14mm
I took a number of images where these two were doing the spider's dance, though it seemed more like the wasp(?) was simply ignoring the spider. Eventually, the spider just parked itself where you see it, and waited patiently for the wasp to leave - which the wasp eventually did.

The spider is a female Misumenops, but I have no idea what the wasp is, or even if it is a wasp. Help to ID would be appreciated.

Thank you for all your help, V and Dave.

:-P)

Moved
Moved from Tenthredo.

Tenthredo sp.

his comment: "There is a group of Tenthredo like this that are wasplike and have somewhat clubbed antennae. Most species are in western N. Amer."

Moved from Cimbicid Sawflies.

Tenthredo
This group of Tenthredo is called the "arcuata group". There are about 17 species in western North America and many are found visiting flowers. All are very similar in color.

weird-looking cimbicid?
see antennae

really fine beast
wasp or no wasp... hmm... in this case, a rather moot question: same order as wasps, but diff. suborder, and no sting -- plus the vernacular tradition calls them ~flies... you see what i mean?

Moved from Ants, Bees, Wasps and Sawflies.

a Möbius experience
I sometimes wonder which is harder: photographing little creatures or identifying them. Fortunately, I don't have to know what something is in order to photograph it - the need to photograph feeds the need to know . . . a Möbius experience.

as a full-blown technophobia patient...
...i can't even start to imagine what a feat taking a picture must be :-]

Point. Shoot. Pray . . . try and figure out what went wrong - - - now, where is that silly button on the camera that fixes this????

:-P)
