large red-shouldered beetle - Osmoderma subplanata

large red-shouldered beetle - Osmoderma subplanata
Vermillion, Clay County, South Dakota, USA
July 25, 2009
Size: body exactly 1 inch long
Found three feet up a plaster wall in my mother's basement stairwell. (Mama was not pleased.) It could open & close the last three antennae segments. Dark red patches on sides of pronotum. A scarab?

Osmoderma subplanata; good job!
[although i see no red on his shoulders -- only two faint lateral spots on the pronotum...]

Moved from ID Request.

Thanks
Thanks for the quick id. It was a cooperative photo subject and even returned to my back door a day after I'd released it.
But... you mean beetles don't have shoulders?

shoulders = front exterior angles of elytra
