Turning Point - Bagrada hilaris

Turning Point - Bagrada hilaris
Peters Canyon, Orange, Orange County, California, USA
July 27, 2009
I shot the first of these on August 17, 2008, here at Peters Canyon. For several months, they were scarce. I saw them only in a small part of this one park - and then only atop mustard blooms. Many were mating.

Well, that's paid off. Today, they are in at least three other parks in Orange County and common enough at Peters to enter the category of "infestation". The day this one was shot, the bugs - in various stages of development - were all over the trail and also perched on dried-out vegetation. Today marked a turning point, since these were the most numerous insects of any species that I saw. Yes, there were more of these than there were honeybees.

Yikes!
Thanks for the update on the proliferation of this species, Ron. I find myself wondering -- especially as my own local population of another invasive is rapidly growing to epic proportions -- if there is a point when the growth explosion begins to limit itself due to over competition for food/resources, or if the range simply continues to expand ever outward?

Invasive vs. Invasive?
Maybe they will eventully move onto Asian Mustard that has been taking over so many especially dunes areas?

We can only hope.
I'm seeing far fewer this year.

Well, I guess you'll find out eventually.
I may not be around for that. There's plenty to nosh on at Peters Canyon, assuming they enjoy dry foliage.
