robber fly - Eudioctria nitida - male

robber fly - Eudioctria nitida - Male
Elkton, Douglas County, Oregon, USA
June 10, 2009
Size: approx 10mm
I've noticed there seem to be two kinds of these: one with the white at the base of the wings, like this one, and one with a basically solid brown wing.

Help to ID would be appreciated.

Moved
Moved from Eudioctria sackeni.

Moved
Moved from Robber Flies.

Male
And they do often have whitening at the base of the wings.

Thanks, Herschel.
Might that explain why this one was smaller than the other, because this one is a male of the species?

:-P)
