is it a syrphid? Never seen a fly with red wings before.

It does look like a syrphid, but it's actually a Tachinid.
There are at least two nicely colorful ones here. Yours is the less common - feather-legged fly (Trichopoda). The other is Cylindromyia.

FYI, syrphids have a spurious wing vein. Info here:
