Small orange caterpillar on corkystem passion vine. - Disonycha

Small orange caterpillar on corkystem passion vine. - Disonycha
Hollywood, Broward County, Florida, USA
August 3, 2009
Size: 4.2 mm.
Caterpillar on corkystem passionvine, intertwined with Aristolochia. Could not find specimen in Minno, Butler, Hall "Florida Butterfly Caterpillars". Early instar of Polydamas that we see have their characteristic purple/brown colour, only two rows of tubercles, feed in groups, and found here only on pipevine, never on passionvine. Second observation of this one this summer. Please note small "balloons" on ends of tubercles.

Disonycha sp. -- det. E.G. Riley

at 4.2 mm we think it is more likely
that this is the larva of a Leaf Beetle in the Chrysomelidae, especially since we don't see any abdominal prolegs. Check in the guide under Leaf Beetles and see what you find. The plant species ID should be a great help.

orange "caterpillar"??
Thanks for your prompt response. There was a rather colourful beetle nearby when I took some outdoor photos (not posted). Beetle is not there now, but the orange thingy is. Did a google search and got a quick lesson about leaf beetles and their monophagous habits. Some I learned are specific to passion vines of the commercial variety. Didn't see exactly this species in the guide, but there was one larva that was similar.
