grasshopper nymph - Boopedon nubilum - female

grasshopper nymph - Boopedon nubilum - Female
California Gulch, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, USA
August 2, 2009
There were hundreds or maybe thousands of nymphs together in the grasses. The commonest adult grasshopper in the area was Syrbula montezuma; could some or all of these be this species?

splendid insect!
What a dapper little creature - the striking black and white pattern gives it the "tuxedo effect" of a penguin. Great photo, hopper nymphs are always too quick for me!

looks like a female nymph of
Boopedon nubilum, The adults are easy to tell apart, but I've never seen the nymphs of B. flaviventris. This one looks just like B. nubilum, and the other one does not. I've been seeing a lot of these at home (central New Mexico) this year too, and there were certainly lots of them last year. Every now and then you will find a green one - dark green tuxedo - interesting affect :)
