Fascista sp.? - Fascista quinella

Fascista sp.? - Fascista quinella
Norman, Cleveland County, Oklahoma, USA
August 8, 2009
It would not stop moving when it was sitting out in the open, so the picture is slightly blurry. Seen at our porch light early this morning. Strange behavior: it would fly around the light frantically and then quickly fly away from the light and wedge itself into a crack or doorway. Then it would come back and do the same thing only a minute later. Thought it was Fascista cercersella, but seems to have an extra spot. Any thoughts?

Take a look
at the three I submitted at the Fascista genus level. They match each other by DNA barcoding and look like this one.

Yeah
After writing to SangMi again, I need to move this one back. She dissected one and it looked like F. cercerisella, thus the move, but once I found out about the DNA on yours, I forgot to move mine to genus level. Sorry!

I'm confused
If this moth was dissected and looked like F. cercerisella, and looks like other moths that have been confirmed as Fascista sp. by DNA, why is there reason to doubt that this is F. cercerisella? Or that the others are, for that matter?

Because
The other moths' DNA (the ones that Mark Dreiling submitted that look like this) did not match F. cercerisella... It was only a match to the genus. Sangmi Lee in a subsequent e-mail said that she believed these are not F. cercerisella. Confusing I know, but until we know what they are I am going to leave these out in Fascista.

Fascista quinella
I am moving this to Fascista quinella. The description matches and Mark's similar specimens are now barcoding as this species. The specimen at BOLD which was used to identify other specimens in the BIN is not public so I can't contact the owner for details. You might ask Sangmi if she has an illustration of the genitalia for this species with which she could compare your specimen.

... appears to be a species for which we currently have no matching photos. (no rsvp, thanks)
