my first idea was Cymindis, but now i'm not so sure
the beast has this Plochionus-ish flair... a sharper pic + pronotal closeup (indispensable for any confident carabid ID) would help a lot. Let's see what Peter has to say.

Moved from ID Request.

Plochionus
too is my first choice based on lebiine habitus (truncated elytra), uniformly shiny dark non-pubscent dorsum, and a rather bell-shaped pronotum with lateral borders widening flat toward base. Two species known in MA. Yes, a clearer image would be helpful.
