Size: ~1"
This looks like a Nymphalid, but had a thin webbing over it and there was another nearby with more. I think the plant was dock.

Burdock and nest building
make it sound like Vanessa cardui. Wagner page 118

 
Dock vs. Burdock
FYI, Burdock (Arctium spp.- Asteraceae) and Dock (Rumex spp.- Polygonaceae) are completely different plants
