5014968 biting fly - Stomoxys calcitrans
Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA
September 7, 2005
Size: ~3/8"
Sorry but this one is a little squashed. It was one of several tormenting me by biting my legs while I was trying to photograph other insects and I finally slapped it after about 5 bites. It had very quick reactions and was not harmless! It wasn't actually killed. I am curious what it is. A bite feels like a needle being pushed in.
